The Wayfinding Centre is a fantastic place to start! We provide support as part of our Registered Professionals program and your service users benefit.
Vision Ireland OT and Mobility Instructor Emma is already a TWC Registered Professional and has made the Wayfinding Centre a starting point for travel training programs.
“It gives people the chance to explore at their own pace,” she says. “There’s no pressure, no onlookers, and no rush. Just a safe space to build confidence and understanding.”
Emma uses the Centre for introductory sessions, giving young people the opportunity to try getting on and off transport, explore safely, and build key concepts in a quiet, controlled setting. For some service users, independent travel might not be the goal, but the benefits are still huge.
“One student I brought is blind, and had never realised how long a bus actually is, or that there’s even an upstairs section,” Emma recalls. “They got to climb the stairs and explore the different seating layouts. It was a lightbulb moment for them.”
Emma has also seen huge benefits for families. “One family came with their child who has low vision and mobility difficulties. They had never travelled abroad together because they were worried how they’d manage. After exploring the Centre and learning about airports, and air travel, you could see their confidence grow. They’ve now booked their first family holiday abroad for this summer!”
The indoor space is also ideal for cane training, especially in the colder months. “We will be able to practise everything from basic techniques to vehicle boarding in a realistic but safe environment.”
As an RP, Emma has access to the practical resources available too. “I’m going to use the Bus Travel Checklist in my upcoming program and plan to trial the new Training Plan template to capture goals and outcomes.”
Emma has also booked a one-to-one session to upskill on using the DART and LUAS modules and iPad resources that are available at the Centre.
